800-mile-long bicycle journey to start Friday morning in Horry County for Habitat for Humanity, 80-year-old to raise awareness and inspire others to get involved

The age means nothing for this 80-year-old who is about to start his 800-mile-long bicycle journey on Friday morning for Habitat for Humanity.

Reported, the 80-year-old John Farr is in final preparation for his journey, 800-mile-long trip that should depart from Horry County on Friday.

Farr, from Du Bois PA, traveled down to the Myrtle Beach area a few days ago, ahead of his trip. And this isn’t the first Bike 2 Build ride for Farr, it’s actually his 16th.

Farr, who is part of the Habitat for Humanity Clearfield County chapter in Pennsylvania, has done these kinds of tours since 2005 in order to raise awareness and inspire others to get involved for Habitat for Humanity.

Despite being a tough pandemic year, Farr continued his tradition and last year he managed to raise more than $23,000 for the organization through his trip.

Farr expects to raise even more money this year. According to him, since the start from Horry County on Friday, part of the funds he is about to raise will go to Horry County Habitat for Humanity chapter.

Horry County Habitat Executive Director Jason Greene said that the help from Farr is more than welcomed since the operational costs, including lumber, are up and every help is more than needed. He also added that they need additional help from local residents and donors. Small donations mean a lot to them.

“We rely heavily on donations to build the houses that we do,” said Greene. “So with John doing this ride, we think it will continue to create the awareness and get it out to public that affordable housing is indeed a crisis here in Horry County and across the country.”

Farr is scheduled to leave the Habitat For Humanity ReStore near Socastee off of Hwy. 544 Friday at 8 a.m. People are asked to come out and send him good luck on his journey.
