Charleston Police Chief informed the public that he has cancer requiring both surgery and chemotherapy

Charleston, South Carolina – The Charleston Police Department Chief Luther Reynolds informed the public and the staff that he has cancer Wednesday morning.

According to his announcement, he discovered that he has cancer almost a month ago when he went to see a doctor for a sore back.

“I am excited about the good care we have here, a good hospital, my faith, my family, the community, the people in this department, and it’s something I wanted to make people aware that I am in a battle with my health,” Reynolds said in his announcement.

Reynolds added that the situation with the cancer is complicated as it requires rigorous treatment plan that includes both surgery and chemotherapy. However, he is happy with the support of his family and friends and most importantly, the support he has with the doctors with the Medical University of South Carolina.

“I’ve received outstanding care so far and feel confident that these steps will help guide me toward a cancer-free prognosis,” he said.

As of now, he doesn’t plan to resign from the position and claims that there will be no break. In the periods when he won’t be able to come at work because of the treatments, there will be acting deputy in place.

“I will be here, I’m not going anywhere,” he said.

“In the weeks that followed the initial diagnosis, my family and I spent time consulting with my medical team at MUSC to determine the best path forward. At this time, that path includes a rigorous treatment plan, with both surgery and chemotherapy,” said Chief Reynolds in a memo to Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg and city council.

“I’ve received outstanding care so far and feel confident that these steps will help guide me toward a cancer-free prognosis.”

He finished expressing his gratitude to Mayor Tecklenburg for his leadership and friendship.
