Dozens of roadways closed across downtown Charleston as a result of the Tropical Storm Elsa

Charleston, South Carolina – Dozens of roads have been closed across downtown Charleston as a result of heavy rainfall in the Lowcountry Thursday morning.

Tropical Storm Elsa heavy rainfalls completely closed at least 10 roads in the downtown area officials say.

According to them, these roads have been closed since 6:30 a.m. while additional roads are closed due to emergencies.

“The Charleston area is experiencing localized flooding and road closures. Avoid unnecessary travel. Use caution and do not drive around barricades,” city officials stated early Thursday.

In the early morning hours crews were already at the scenes of several roads pumping the water out in an effort to reopen the roads for vehicles as soon as possible.

Tropical Storm Elsa reached South Carolina overnight. Previously it hit Florida in the late morning hours on Wednesday.

There have been numerous reports about downed trees, downed power lines and power outages in the Lowcountry as a result of the heavy rain and strong wind. Several small tornados have been also reported across the area this morning.

As of 5 a.m., the system was located about 90 miles west-northwest of Charleston and was heading northeast at 18 miles per hour.
