‘License to kill?’ No restrictions, no background check, no approval – Texas open carry gun law becoming reality

Texas is well known to its loosest gun laws in the United States with more than 1.6 million licensed handgun holders. With the latest law to be signed by Gov. Greg Abbott, everyone can buy and carry gun in public without restrictions.

Law enforcement groups objected and confronted this law claiming it would endanger the public safety, but despite everything, The Republican-dominated Legislature approved the measure Monday sending it to Gov. Greg Abbott for signature. And he is about to sign it!

What this means for Texans? Once the law is signed, everyone will be eligible to buy and carry handgun in public without background check, license and the ‘basic training’.

There have been several mass shootings in Texas in recent history, but lawmakers pushed the new gun law without taking them into consideration. Texans remember the shooting in El Paso Walmart, a church in Sutherland Springs, and a high school outside Houston. But some people say shooters in these cases used assault-style rifles, not handguns. And they are partially right.

Handgun law supporters also added that Texas is just another state to allow open carry handgun among some other states that already approved similar law, claiming there is no increase in shooting incidents in those states. But Texas is by far the most populous among all of them.

According to Politico, supporters of the bill say it would allow Texans to better defend themselves in public while abolishing unnecessary impediments to the constitutional right to bear arms.

The recent handgun law in Texas will allow everyone aged 21 and older to carry gun in public. But people with previous criminal and violent history will be excluded of this list. People are just unsure how stores can check on them.
