North Charleston, South Carolina – One person was killed in a Tuesday afternoon crash that took place at the intersection of Dorchester Road and Scarsdale Avenue, the NCPD confirmed.

According to the department, the crash that happened at around 5 p.m. is under investigation.

Master Trooper David Jones said that a North Charleston police officer crashed with another vehicle while he was responding to a reported shooting incident. The driver of the second vehicle was killed in the crash.

The officer’s vehicle, a 2018 Dodge Charger, was traveling east on Dorchester Road when it struck a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu that was attempting to turn left from Scarsdale Avenue onto Dorchester Road, Jones said.

The officer, later identified as Jeremy Kraft, was transferred to hospital for treatment after suffering injuries in the incident. The driver of the Malibu was pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries sustained in the crash.

The officer’s condition remains unknown as no additional information was given about the extent of the injuries.

“I’d like to give condolences to the family of the young lady that was in that car,” Police Chief Reggie Burgess said at the crash scene.

The North Charleston Police Department confirmed that officer Kraft was headed to a shooting scene in the 5200 block of West Montague Avenue and at the time of the crash, he was driving with lights and sirens.

The fatal crash is under investigation. The department is expected to provide more details as soon as the dashcam video from the officer’s vehicle is reviewed.
