Poll workers needed in Charleston area

Charleston, South Carolina – Presidential primaries are ahead and both parties are looking to hire hundreds of poll workers for the upcoming primary elections that are set to start as early as February 3.

South Carolina is gearing up for an important political moment with its first Democratic presidential primary set for Saturday, February 3, and the Republican primary following on February 24.

In the Democratic race, President Biden, Minnesota Representative Dean Phillips, and Marianne Williamson will be on the ballot. For the Republicans, the contenders include ex-President Donald Trump, ex-South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Chris Christie.

To prepare for these significant events, Charleston County’s Board of Voter Registration and Elections is offering many paid positions to those eager to help out. They are paying $200 to each poll worker for their service in each election.

Isaac Cramer, the Executive Director of the board, emphasizes the importance of this role. He said it’s not just a job, but a duty to support democracy, protect voting rights, and contribute positively to the community. The work of poll workers is crucial for a smooth voting process and to empower all eligible voters.

These roles are diverse, including welcoming voters, registering them, and managing curbside voting. Anyone interested in becoming a poll worker should be a registered voter in South Carolina or at least 16 years old. They must also complete both online and in-person training and be available for the entire Election Day. Being impartial and neutral is essential for this role, but previous experience isn’t needed as training is provided.
