Saturday evening crash on Johns Island resulted with 1 killed and 8 other injured, driver arrested for driving under influence

Johns Island, South Carolina – Driver was arrested for DUI after the Saturday evening crash on Johns Island that left 8 injured, while one person was killed, police confirmed.

According to the incident report, the crash took place near the intersection of Maybank Highway and Bohicket Road on Johns Island around 6:40 p.m. That part of the road was closed for several hours and was reopened around 12:45 a.m.

Police said a GMC SUV was traveling west on Maybank Highway when it veered over the center line and sideswiped an Infiniti sedan traveling east before then striking a Lincoln sedan head on.

The police confirmed that a total of eight people were transferred to hospital for treatment.

A backseat passenger in the Lincoln sedan was pronounced deceased at a hospital. The Lincoln driver suffered serious injuries and he remains in hospital in critical condition.

The police also confirmed that the driver of the GMC SUV was intoxicated when the incident occurred. He was arrested for felony DUI.

The driver was identified as the 21-year-old Jose Javier Reyes-Escobar of Johns Island and he is now facing multiple charges including three counts of Felony DUI, one count DUI, No Driver’s License, and Open Container.

The local authorities are still investigating the case and more details are expected in the upcoming days.
