South Carolina teachers will finally get the postponed raise, SC Senate approves

Columbia, South Carolina – The small teacher raise planned for the beginning of the school year that was postponed due to economic uncertainty with the COVID-19, passed the Senate on Thursday.

The increase will cost the state $50 million. All the teachers will be given the raise in a lump sum in June.

According to the reports, the teachers will get several hundred dollars for each year of service.

There were a few changes made in the bill, which now includes school nurses in the raise. Because of this, the House will have to vote on it again. The previous approval took place on Jan. 28.

This was previously suspended because the House was not sure how the Covid-19 crisis will impact the state economy. They kept a promise to review this case after sometime in order to see the impact in the upcoming months.

Step raises for next school year and any other possible increases in teacher pay will be taken up in the full state budget which the House will consider over the next few weeks.
