Sunday afternoon crash in Colleton County fatal for three people; a total of six vehicles, all traveling southbound on I-95, were involved in the collision

Colleton County, South Carolina – Six vehicles were involved in the fatal crash that killed three people Sunday afternoon in Colleton County, South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed.

According to the incident report, the deadly collision took place on I-95, near mile marker 53, around 4:45 p.m. on Sunday.

Master Trooper Gary Miller confirmed that a total of six vehicles, all traveling southbound on I-95, were involved in the crash that was fatal for three people. Miller also said that all three of the people who died in the accident were in the same car.

When first responders arrived at the scene, a total of five vehicles were in the median, while one vehicle was on the opposite shoulder. Two of the vehicles that were in the median were on fire, and fire crews immediately started extinguishing the fire, preventing even more damage. The three victims were in one of the burning vehicles.

In the period between the crash and first responders’ arrival, several bystanders attempted to rescue the victims from the burning vehicle, but without success. During the unsuccessful rescue attempts, one person suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene but refused transfer to the hospital for further treatment. Meanwhile, several other bystanders were assisting injured people on the side of the road.

Seven people were hospitalized at a local hospital for further treatment. A teenage girl, however, suffered more serious injuries and was flown from the scene to a trauma center. No details about the extent of the injuries were immediately provided.

According to Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, southbound lanes on I-95 were closed for six hours while crews responded to the accident.

As of now, it remains unknown what led to the incident that killed three and injured a total of eight people, but the South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

The identities of the victims were not released to the public.
