The man who was rescued from capsized boat last week, reunites with Coast Guard rescuers

Charleston, South Carolina – The man who was rescued last week from his capsized boat from the water around the Stono River Inlet will meat the rescuers from the Coast Guard on Wednesday.

According to the latest info, they will come together at Charleston Executive Airport at 10 a.m.

The accident happened last week on Thursday when U.S. Coast Guard Sector Charleston received multiple mayday calls and two MH-65 Dolphin helicopters were used during the effort.

One crew managed to locate the man, take him back to safety and then transfer him to hospital.

According to the Coast Guard, the man was one mile east of the inlet after his sailboat capsized. When one of the crews spotted the man, one rescuer dropped into the water to assist him.

“Our helicopter is equipped with direction-finding equipment that allows us to locate the direction of a distress call very quickly,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jake Wrieden, aircraft commander on the case.

“We were fortunate to hear two distress calls during the search and were able to hone in on the survivor using maritime distress Channel 16. This equipment allowed us to locate and rescue the survivor who had been in the water for almost two hours making calls on a survival radio,” he added.

“We had to filter through numerous non- distress calls on Channel 16, which degraded our ability to locate the survivor. We would like to remind all mariners to use Channel 16 for hailing and distress only. You never know who is relying on it.”

The man spent more than two hours in the water. However, his was feeling well and he was released from hospital after the examination.
