The results of the last batch of tests shows increase in number of cases, DHEC reported 1,059 new Covid-19 cases on Friday

South Carolina – After a few days with stable and low Covid-19 cases, DHEC on Friday announced a slight increase in the number of cases following the results from the last batch of tests.

According to the DHEC report, South Carolina added 1,059 new Covid-19 cases on Friday and 62 additional Covid-19 related deaths.

The data for new cases and deaths comes with a 2-day delay meaning that those numbers are results of the data taken on Wednesday. Friday’s report included 738 cases confirmed through PCR tests and another 321 detected through rapid tests.

When it comes to the number of deaths, 48 cases are considered as confirmed deaths, while 14 are considered as probable deaths. According to DHEC, twelve deaths were reported in the Lowcountry.

With these number, the Palmetto State reached 891,072 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic.

714,586 of those cases were detected using PCR tests, while 176,486 were detected with rapid tests.

The total number of Covid-19 deaths reached 13,472 since the start of the pandemic.

That total includes 11,651 deaths classified as “confirmed” and an additional 1,821 classified as “probable.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says a “probable” death is defined as a death that:

  • Meets clinical criteria and epidemiologic linkage with no confirmatory laboratory testing performed for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
  • Meets presumptive laboratory evidence
  • Meets vital records criteria with no confirmatory laboratory evidence for SARS-CoV-2.

The positivity rate among all tests conducted is 4.5%.
