‘We will form new party’: 100 Republicans, former governors and lawmakers, threaten if GOP doesn’t split from Trump

Republican anti-Trump group consisted of former officials, members of Congress, ambassadors, Cabinet secretaries, and party chairmen threaten to leave the party and form a new one if GOP doesn’t split from the ex-president Donald Trump.

“When in our democratic republic, forces of conspiracy, division, and despotism arise, it is the patriotic duty of citizens to act collectively in defense of liberty and justice,” this was part of the letter exclusively published by New York Times for first time.

One of group’s organizers is Miles Taylor, the former Homeland Security chief of staff who anonymously wrote a 2018 Times op-ed about “resistance” in the Trump administration.

“If the GOP can’t break free of the nauseating cult of personality around Donald Trump, then they’ll not only get an intra-party civil war, they’ll see a breakaway movement running against them in key races around the country,” Taylor told Insider.

The Republican Party has been split over Trump since the 2016 United States presidential election, but this is especially notable in the last couple of months from January till now.

According to NY Times and Insider, former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, and former Transportation Secretary Mary Peters, who served under President George W. Bush, are among those who will sign the letter.

The last “incident” in Republican Party was the removal of Rep. Liz Cheney from her powerful position as chair of the House Republican Conference. This came after the pushed against Trump regarding his false claims about the 2020 presidential election and this is just another claim that the split in GOP over Trump is much bigger than expected.
