January has been the best month for South Carolina ports, 226,515 twenty-foot equivalent container units handled last month

Charleston, South Carolina – The supply chain issue has been a growing problem since the start of the pandemic and while the customers are having hard times to buy the things the want, ports across the country are having hard time to process the record number of containers arriving from around the world.

South Carolina ports are working around the clock to handle as many containers as possible and last year has been a good year for them because of the increased operations.

According to the latest data provided by the South Carolina ports, in January SC ports handled a record number of containers.

SC Ports handled 226,515 twenty-foot equivalent container units at Wando Welch Terminal, North Charleston Terminal and Hugh K. Leatherman Terminals last month which is a nearly 5% increase over last year.

SC Ports CEO Jim Newsome said that part of the success for the SC ports achievement is the major investments they’ve done in the past years especially in the infrastructure.

Outside of cargo, the ports also welcomed back the Carnival Sunshine cruise ship. More than 9,000 passengers sailed into or out of Charleston in the last month.
