John Rhodes, former Myrtle Beach mayor, dies aged 78 due to Covid-19 complications

Myrtle Beach, S. C. – Former Myrtle Beach mayor John Rhodes died on Saturday as a result of a complications with Covid-19 after several days of fighting the virus.

Sunday noon, this information was confirmed by the city of Myrtle Beach with an announcement about the bad news.

John Rhodes was mayor for a total of 12 years from 2005 to 2017 when he lost in the last election to his rival, now mayor, Brenda Bethune.

While Rhodes was in power during those 12 years, the city was successful in many fields and he will be remembered as one of the best mayors and a favorite of the locals. Two of the many projects we will mention are the development of The Market Common and Savannah’s Playground and the revitalization to the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk.

“John Rhodes had nothing but love for this community,” said Bethune in a statement. “He lived his life to make it better and always did so with humor. Myrtle Beach is a better place because of his leadership. John was a long time friend of my family’s and I have nothing but fond memories of him and respect. My heartfelt prayers are with Terri and his entire family.”

May he rest in peace.
