Shortly before her performance to raise awareness on domestic violence, son killed his mother, singer leaving the body on the driveway

The number of violent of crimes is constantly rising in the last couple of years and almost every state across United States sees rising trend in cases making it one of the biggest issues Americans face nowadays.

In an effort to reduce the number of violent crime cases, authorities and the community are working together through programs, events and gatherings to raise awareness on domestic violence, something that bothers every single person.

In today’s case, a singer who was directly involved to raise awareness on domestic violence, was shot and killed by her son just a day before her performance at a event dedicated to raise awareness on domestic violence.

According to the police report, the incident took place in the end of September in Virginia when the 41-year-old L. Acree was shot once in her chest by her son, identified as the 21-year-old E. Smith, after a short dispute.

The shooting took place in front of Acree’s house and that one bullet ended up to be fatal for her. Smith fled the scene and left his mother’s dead body on the driveway until a neighbor saw it and called the local authorities.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Acree suffering apparent gunshot wound and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police found out that Smith was responsible for the shooting and they were able to locate him shortly after the incident in a nearby hotel.

Smith was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Police believe he is the only one involved in the shooting and main suspect in the case.

An investigation found that “there was a domestic argument that occurred before the shooting between the mother and son,” authorities said.

Acree was known for her powerful voice as part of the band True Soul. The group was gearing up for a show the day after the shooting that’s aimed at raising awareness about domestic violence.

Smith was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail. He had recently been released from jail on bond, awaiting trial on an assault and battery charge. That charge was not domestic in nature, NBC reported.
