South Carolina man involved in the Capitol riot incidents sentenced to 44 months in prison for assaulting law enforcement, report

Charleston, South Carolina – The 26-year-old Nicholas Languerand of Little River was sentenced to 44 months in prison for assaulting law enforcement with dangerous weapon during the Capitol Riot events last year, multiple outlets reported.

According to the U.S Attorney’s Office, Languerand was among rioters standing near the archway leading from the Lower West Terrace to the interior of the Capitol.

The court records indicate that Languerand attacked the U.S. Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police Department with several different objects. The prosecutors presented evidence that the suspect threw an orange traffic barrier and two stick-like objects among the many other objects.

Investigators say based on the size and weight of the objects, as well as the speed and force with which Languerand threw them, the items were capable of inflicting serious bodily injury, U.S Attorney’s Office Spokesperson Bill Miller says.

In addition to attacking the officers, he also took a police riot shield from the officers, struck it against the ground and then used the shield to protect himself from the officers while he was constantly confronting them.

At the time of the Capitol breach, Languerand was residing in Wolcott, Vermont. He later moved to South Carolina, where he was arrested on April 15.

The sentence came after he pleaded guilty two months ago on November 3. Languerand pleaded guilty to assaulting, resisting or impeding officers with a dangerous weapon.

In addition to his prison sentence, Languerand was ordered on Wednesday to pay $2,000 in restitution.
