Suicide prevention walk in Myrtle Beach sets new attendance record

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Group of people rallied to promote suicide prevention in the Grand Strand on Saturday.

More than 350 people attended the annual “Out of the Darkness Walk”, setting new record high. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the prevention walk was the largest that ever took place in South Carolina.

The fundraiser goal at the walk reached $50,000. The money will be used to accomplish the goal of lowering the suicide rates by 20% until 2025.

Many people gathered at the annual walk on Saturday carrying framed photos or t-shirts of acquaintances or family member who died by suicide.

The governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster, signed a law this past summer requiring schools to provide the phone number National Suicide Prevention Hotline on the back of ID’s for students in 7th through 12th grade.

They think that this law will help youngster who are considered most vulnerable to suicide.

This kind of event event was held in many cities across the country over the weekend.
