Eric Derell Smith who was accused of killing his ex-wife and abducting his 3-month-old child used the baby as a human shield in a shootout with the police.
What began as a domestic dispute in Louisiana, ended as a shootout in Mississippi leaving multiple people dead.
According to Biloxi police reports, officers responded to a 911 call regarding a shooting on Monday afternoon in Christin Parker’s home in Louisiana. Christin, Smith ex-wife, and her nephew were found shot to death in the apartment. Police immediately found that the baby was missing and started looking for Smith and the infant.
Officers learned that Smith was spotted on Interstate 10 heading east and nearing Gulfport, Mississippi. Between the Gulfport and D’Iberville exits, the suspect drove into the grass median. A shootout ensued.
According to police, Smith was holding the baby in his arms during the shootout and he used the baby a shield. Unfortunately, both the baby and Smith were shot during the incident. Smith died at the scene, while the baby suffered heavy injuries. Police officers and deputies involved in the shootout were put on administrative leave pending the investigation.
The 3-month-old baby was identified as La’Mello Parker. The infant was transferred to Children’s and Women’s Hospital, where he died.
Parker’s neighbors in East Baton Rouge were stunned by the incident. According to them, their neighborhood is calm and they couldn’t remember such an incident before.
