Charleston, South Carolina – The corpse of a boater who had been reported missing on Tuesday has been discovered the next day in the Charleston Harbor and identified by the Charleston County Coroner’s Office.
The Charleston Police Department provided information that the elderly man was carried away by the current after choosing to go for a swim while sailing with friends in the Wappoo Cut.
Search efforts were carried out on Tuesday by the Charleston Police Department, the Charleston Fire Department, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and the United States Coast Guard until the sun went down. The search efforts continued on Wednesday.
The body of the man was located in the Charleston Harbor close to the Battery at around 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
The recovered boater has been identified as 73-year-old Charleston resident Thomas Dovell, according to the coroner for Charleston County, Bobbi Jo O’Neal.
The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
