Wednesday night crash in Bluffton results with one dead and three injured, lanes still closed in the morning hours (Update)

Beaufort County, South Carolina – One person was killed and three other injured and then transferred to hospital for treatment as a result of the crash that took place Wednesday night on Highway 278 in Bluffton.

According to the authorities, several lanes of the highway were closed even in the morning hours on Thursday while the investigators were investigating the scene.

All westbound lanes of Highway 278 are blocked near Moss Creek Drive are blocked and traffic is being diverted to the Bluffton flyover, Beaufort County deputies say. The left and center eastbound lanes of Highway 278 are also still closed.

The first responders said that the South Carolina State Troopers were dispatched at the scene on U.S. Highway 278 near Moss Creek Drive, Master Trooper Brian Lee said just after 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

From what was seen on the scene, three vehicles were involved in the crash.

SC State Troopers said that the accident happened when a 2018 Dodge Journey was crossing U.S. 278 and was struck by a 2012 Hyundai sedan and a 2013 Infiniti SUV.

The passenger of the Dodge was ejected from the vehicle as a result of the heavy hit and was pronounced dead at the scene.

All passengers from the other vehicles suffered injuries and were transferred to hospital for treatment.

Police didn’t reveal their condition.

Authorities didn’t reveal the identities of those involved in the crash. More details are expected during the day or tomorrow.

The crash remained under investigation by the Highway Patrol and its accident investigation team.

UPDATE: The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says all lanes of Highway 278 in Bluffton have reopened after an investigation into a deadly Wednesday night crash.
