Charleston PD reveals the identity of the officer who opened fire during chase

Charleston, S. C. – Charleston police department reveals the identity of the officer who opened fire during chase in Tuesday night.

The name of the police officer is Sammy Stevens who is currently on administrative leave and has been part of the police department for more than 5 years.

Officers chased a vehicle on Spruill Avenue into North Charleston, ending the pursuit near Beech Avenue after trying to stop a vehicle that had been reported stolen. During the chase, Officer Sammy Stevens opened fire and shot Montrez Cyrus Simmons.

According to the latest information, Simmons is in life-threating and critical condition . Earlier, the police were looking for Simmons for murder and two vehicle thefts.

Chief Luther Reynolds said he is very proud of his colleagues for arresting a man wanted for several offenses.

Administrative leave is a standard procedure for any police officer who is part of a shooting while an investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division is taking place.
