“No ICU beds available, you will have to wait for another child to die,” said Texas judge and this statement says enough for the current Covid-19 situation

The situation with the Covid-19 has been pretty intense for weeks in the country and some states are seeing record high number in cases and hospitalizations as a result of the spread of the Delta variant. What differs the latest wave from all the previous ones, is the fact that lately more and more children are getting infected with the virus, something that was not the case since the start of the pandemic.

The first reason for this is the thing that the Delta variant is proven to be far more contagious compared to all the previous variants and the second reason is the fact that children under 12 are not eligible for vaccination, while the percentage of those vaccinated aged 12-16 still remains pretty low despite officials’ effort for vaccination.

Texas is one of the states with the worst Covid-19 record in the latest wave. Daily numbers are nearly record highs, but the biggest issue is the ICU availability since most the beds are occupied with Covid-19 patients. If numbers mean nothing to you, then last Friday’s statement for a Dallas County Judge says a lot:

“Your child will wait for another child to die” before getting one (ICU bed). “If your child’s in a car wreck, if your child has a congenital heart defect,” the judge said, “and needs an ICU bed, or more likely if they have COVID and need an ICU bed, we don’t have one.”

What is even more alarming is the fact the situation is similar for adults too and the situation is becoming more and more intense every day around the state. According to a recent information, a man who’s been shot six times few days ago, has been waiting for required surgery for days.

North Central Texas Trauma Regional Advisory Council data shows that only a few couple of ICU beds are available in the Dallas County area, something that never happened before.

Latest data from the Texas Department of State Health Services shows that more than 10,000 patients are being hospitalized as a result of the Delta variant and the number is constantly increasing. Texas is among the states who banned the mask mandate and vaccination passport, an executive order that was signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in June.

However, some judges challenged the ban across the state and on of them is Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins who practically allowed some schools in the Dallas area to require their students and teachers masks. While Gov. Abbott appealed this ruling to the Texas Supreme Court to uphold his original order, judges in some other counties are following Jenkin’s decision.

According to the latest data, about 52% of the Americans are now fully vaccinated but it seems that this number is still far from required to keep everyone safe and stop the spread of the virus. Health officials are urging everyone to get vaccinated as soon as possible claiming vaccines are the only way to beat the pandemic.

Meanwhile, numerous studies have shown that the vaccines efficacy drops when it comes to the Delta variant. The most alarming thing is the fact that CDC doesn’t officially count those infected who are fully vaccinated, while some states like New York started requiring people proof of vaccination to enter restaurants, bars and gyms.
